Ichinomiya you reach by boat
10 ichinomiya cannot be reached by road. They are spread over 8 islands, and you need a boat or a plane. That is why none of them appears in a driving route, and why they need planning of their own.
There are no timetables on this page
Departure times, frequencies and fares are left out on purpose. They change with the season and with every timetable revision, so anything we copied would go out of date. Always check with the operator — each island below links to the operators’ own sites.
What we do give: the ports and airports, who runs the service, the crossing time as officially published, and whether you can take a car. Where no official source states something, we say so rather than estimate it. The operators and sources are Japanese; their sites are mostly in Japanese.

Four things to know before you plan
- Oki has two ichinomiya, on two different islands. The crossing between Dōgo and Dōzen is another boat, so visiting both adds a connection.
- On Iki and on Tsushima, the two shrines are nearest different ports. Decide which port you are landing at first.
- High-speed boats may not carry cars. On Sado and Tsushima the operators state that the jetfoil takes no vehicles. If you are driving, you need the car ferry.
- Miyajima has a visitor tax. It is added to the ferry fare, so there is nothing to arrange — but it is good to know.
Oki — Dōgo隠岐・島後(どうご)
Oki is four inhabited islands, and the two ichinomiya sit on two different ones. Saigō is the port for Dōgo.

- Each of Oki’s four inhabited islands has its own port. Nishinoshima town warns travellers to double-check the port and time of departure.
- Dōgo and Dōzen are separated by sea too — about 1 hour by ferry or about 30 minutes by high-speed boat. Build that crossing into the plan if you are visiting both ichinomiya.
