The ichinomiya of this province is not settled

2 shrines here are treated as the ichinomiya of Awa Province (Chiba). Shrines that compete for the same title are called ronsha (論社). We list them all rather than picking one, and say what each claim rests on.

What the Japanese sources say

Awa Jinja (安房神社) and Susaki Jinja (洲崎神社) are both named as the ichinomiya of Awa, but the official record leans towards Awa Jinja. Chiba Prefecture’s official tourism site, Chiba Kanko Navi, calls it “Awa Jinja, ichinomiya of Awa Province”.

For Susaki Jinja, neither Tateyama City’s cultural property page nor Chiba Prefecture’s official tourism site describes it as the ichinomiya. The “Susaki Daimyōjin Engi” (洲崎大明神縁起), a shrine’s account of its own origins that is designated a cultural property by Tateyama City, records that the shrine enshrines the consort deity of Ame no Futodama no Mikoto, the deity of Awa Jinja, and tells of Minamoto no Yoritomo’s prayer there and the revival of the Minamoto clan.

— That the two shrines have long been spoken of as a pair can be read from the origin account, but there is no primary source saying that this led to two shrines holding the title (this site’s own reading).

Written from Japanese sources, each quoted. The Japanese page has the same discussion with the original wording.
