The ichinomiya of this province is not settled

2 shrines here are treated as the ichinomiya of Shima Province. Shrines that compete for the same title are called ronsha (論社). We list them all rather than picking one, and say what each claim rests on.

What the Japanese sources say

Izawanomiya (伊雑宮) and Izawa Jinja (伊射波神社) are both called the ichinomiya of Shima Province, but Izawanomiya does not call itself an ichinomiya. On the official website of the Jingu (Ise Jingu) it is placed as a betsugu (an auxiliary shrine) of the Kotai Jingu, and as a tonomiya (遙宮, written with characters meaning ‘distant shrine’).

For Izawa Jinja, Ise-Shima Kanko Navi, run by the Ise-Shima Tourism and Convention Organization, calls it the ichinomiya of Shima Province.

— The placing of Izawanomiya as an ichinomiya appears to come from the pilgrimage side rather than from the Jingu (this site’s view). The basis for it, however, could not be confirmed.

Written from Japanese sources, each quoted. The Japanese page has the same discussion with the original wording.

Where this province is today

The ichinomiya of Shima Province now stand in Mie. Provinces and prefectures do not line up — a province can be split across several prefectures, and a prefecture can hold several provinces.
