Tamba Province Ichinomiya

Izumo Daijingu

出雲大神宮

Izumo Daijingu is the ichinomiya — the leading shrine — of the former Tamba Province, in present-day Kyoto. It has a car park (about 80 spaces); the sources we checked do not give a fee. Opening hours end at 16:30 (shrine office). Without a car, the shrine's own website gives 1 route from a station (by bus); the station names are listed below. Its principal annual festival (reisai) falls on October 21 every year. We found 14 entries for the shrine in Japan’s national database of designated cultural properties. The nearest other ichinomiya is Kamowakeikazuchi Jinja, 16 km to the east in a straight line.

Parking

It has a car park (about 80 spaces); the sources we checked do not give a fee.

History in brief

According to the shrine's tradition, the first shrine buildings were erected in 709 (Wado 2) under Empress Genmei.
Buildings
The present hall dates from the late Kamakura period; before that, the sacred mountain Mikageyama itself was worshipped.

History
The shrine says it once had 36 subsidiary shrines, which were lost to fires of war.

Summarised from the shrine's own website (出雲大神宮 由緒, checked 2026-10-08). Traditions are given as the shrine tells them, not as established history.

Enshrined deities

The shrine's website says Ōkuninushi and his consort Mihotsuhime are enshrined, and that the two together are called Izumo Ōkami — hence Izumo Daijingū.

Nearest ichinomiya

The closest is Kamowakeikazuchi Jinja, about 16 km to the east in a straight line, the ichinomiya of Yamashiro Province. After that come Kamomioya Jinja (18 km east) and Katano Jinja (26 km south).

Straight-line distances between the shrines, not road distances. Across mountains or water, the drive is much longer.
