The ichinomiya of this province is not settled

2 shrines here are treated as the ichinomiya of Owari Province. Shrines that compete for the same title are called ronsha (論社). We list them all rather than picking one, and say what each claim rests on.

What the Japanese sources say

Two shrines, Masumida Jinja (真清田神社) and Omiwa Jinja (大神神社), in Hanaike in Ichinomiya City, call themselves the ichinomiya of Owari Province.

The city of Ichinomiya explains the origin of its name this way: “In the Heian period, when the provincial governor (kokushi) went round the shrines of his province to worship at them, the shrine he set out for first was called the ‘ichinomiya.’” “Because the ‘ichinomiya’ of Owari Province was Masumida Jinja, this area, the town in front of its gate, came in time to be called ‘Ichinomiya.’” The official explanation by the city names only Masumida Jinja, and makes no mention of Omiwa Jinja.

Omiwa Jinja’s authorised website says it “was designated the ‘ichinomiya of Owari’ in the Nara period,” but that does not fit the period of the system the city of Ichinomiya describes, which it traces to the order in which provincial governors made their visits in the Heian period. No public source explaining this discrepancy could be found.

Where this province is today

The ichinomiya of Owari Province now stand in Aichi. Provinces and prefectures do not line up — a province can be split across several prefectures, and a prefecture can hold several provinces.
