Tango Province Reference entry

Manai Jinja

真名井神社

Manai Jinja is listed here for reference under the former Tango Province, in present-day Kyoto. It is not on the Ichinomiya Junpaikai’s list. It has no car park of its own. Without a car, a local tourism body gives 1 route from a station (on foot), one of them a walk of 7 min; the station names are listed below. The nearest other ichinomiya is Izushi Jinja, 32 km to the west in a straight line.

This is a reference entry

This shrine is not on the map published by the Ichinomiya Pilgrimage Association (Zenkoku Ichinomiya Junpaikai). We include it for context. It is not presented as a current ichinomiya.

Parking

It has no car park of its own.

The note above is in Japanese; it usually records dates when the car park is closed, and the fee.

History in brief

Founding
According to Kono Jinja's tradition, Toyouke-no-Okami has been worshipped at Manaihara since the age of the gods, as Yosa-no-miya.
Moved
In Yoro 3, the main shrine was moved from this inner-shrine site to the present location of Kono Jinja.
History
According to legend, Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Mikoto moved the sacred water from a well in Takachiho to a well at Manaihara.

Summarised from the shrine's own website (元伊勢籠神社 由緒(奥宮眞名井神社を含む), checked 2026-10-08). Traditions are given as the shrine tells them, not as established history.

Enshrined deities

Kono Jinja's website says the inner shrine's rock seat enshrines Toyouke-no-Ōkami as principal deity, with Amaterasu, Izanagi and Izanami on the western rock seat. At Kono Jinja itself the principal deity is Hikohoakari.

Nearest ichinomiya

The closest is Izushi Jinja, about 32 km to the west in a straight line, the ichinomiya of Tajima Province. After that come Awaga Jinja (41 km south-west) and Wakasahime Jinja (54 km east).

Straight-line distances between the shrines, not road distances. Across mountains or water, the drive is much longer.
