Izu Province Ichinomiya

Mishima Taisha

三嶋大社

Mishima Taisha is the ichinomiya — the leading shrine — of the former Izu Province, in present-day Shizuoka. It has a car park (about 55 spaces), paid. Opening hours end at 16:00 (prayer-rite desk). Without a car, the shrine's own website gives 2 routes from a station (on foot), one of them a walk of about 15 min; the station names are listed below. Its principal annual festival (reisai) falls on August 16 every year. We found 6 entries for the shrine in Japan’s national database of designated cultural properties, 1 of them National Treasure. The nearest other ichinomiya is Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, 30 km to the north-west in a straight line.

Parking

It has a car park (about 55 spaces), paid.

Directions to the car park

This routes you to the car park, not to the hall. From this car park to the hall is about 50 m in a straight line (the walk is longer). The location is taken from OpenStreetMap and has not been checked on the ground.

The note above is in Japanese; it usually records dates when the car park is closed, and the fee.

History in brief

Founding
The founding date is unknown; the shrine says its worship arose from beliefs tied to volcanic island-building and sea travel between the Izu Peninsula and islands.
History
At the end of the Heian period, Minamoto no Yoritomo, exiled to Izu, revered the shrine and prayed for the revival of the Minamoto clan.
History
In the Edo period, facing the Tōkaidō at the start of the Shimoda Kaidō, the name Mishima Daimyōjin became widely known.
Buildings
The shrine says the halls collapsed in the Tōkai earthquake of November 1854 and were rebuilt over ten years at a cost of 16,677 ryō.

Enshrined deities

The shrine's website says Ōyamatsumi-no-Mikoto and Tsumihayae-Kotoshironushi-no-Kami are enshrined together and called, as a pair, Mishima Daimyōjin.

The closest is Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, about 30 km to the north-west in a straight line, the ichinomiya of Suruga Province. After that come Samukawa Jinja (51 km north-east) and Sengen Jinja (62 km north).

Straight-line distances between the shrines, not road distances. Across mountains or water, the drive is much longer.
