Plan a day's route that reaches each office before it closes
At most ichinomiya the charm counter and shrine office close between 4 and 5 pm. If you are visiting several in one day, the ones that close earliest should come first — but leaving a distant shrine until later can cost you more time on the road. From the closing times we have checked shrine by shrine (81 shrines) and each shrine's coordinates, this works out the order that reaches the most offices in time.
Driving times are rough. The straight-line distance between two shrines is multiplied by 1.3 to stand in for the road distance, then divided by the speed you choose (rounded up to 5 minutes). Mountain roads, traffic, waiting for a parking space and ferries are not included. Closing times are the ones the shrines publish, and they change with the season and with festivals; check the source on each shrine page before you go. The 10 island shrines reached by boat and the summit shrine of Oyama Jinja on Mt Tate are left out, as you cannot drive to them. The date of visit is used only for the 7 shrines whose closing time changes with the season or at New Year (Ōmiwa Jinja's counter closes at 16:30 from December to February, for example), and to flag the 28 shrines with New Year parking or traffic notes (list) (29 December to 7 January). The result can be opened as a Google Maps route, or saved to your calendar as that day's plan (.ics), one event per shrine from its arrival time. What you enter is used only on this screen; it is not sent anywhere or saved, and the .ics file is made in your browser. Renting a car? See Visiting the ichinomiya by car.
Worked examples: the latest arrival that still reaches every office
For the 12 prefectures where at least three shrines publish a closing time, this is the latest time you can reach the first shrine and still arrive at every shrine with a known closing time at least 15 minutes before it closes (30 minutes at each shrine, 40 km/h, factor 1.3).

Where these coordinates come from
Ichinomiya are often far from a station, so every shrine page carries coordinates for a satnav. Each page now also says where that coordinate came from and how close it is.

On 1 October 2026 we moved 37 pins
For the site's first weeks, 37 pins did not point at the shrine, and 17 of them were more than a kilometre out. Geocoding an address against Japan's national mapping agency returns the best match it can find, and for these it stopped at the centroid of the neighbourhood or the town rather than the street number.
The data had said so all along. Every record stored how much of the address the geocoder had matched — we simply never showed it, so nobody could see the problem. This was not a gap in our checking so much as a failure to look at what we already held.
Each shrine page now states where its coordinate came from and how closely it is known. Oyama Jinja has coordinates for the first time — though it stands on the summit of Mount Tate and can only be reached on foot.

The largest, Ani Jinja at 17.0 km, had a different cause: we only knew the address as far as "Okayama City". The Okayama Prefectural Shrine Office gives it in full, so we corrected the address itself. Amatsu Jinja was the same, fixed from the shrine's own website.
Next is Oyama Jinja Chūgū Kiganden at 16.9 km: its district runs all the way up to the summit of Mount Tate, so the centroid sat high in the mountains. Itsukushima Jinja's 2.8 km was the centre of the whole island of Miyajima.

- Izawa Jinja伊射波神社

- Tsutsukowake Jinja都々古別神社
- The address resolves only as far as 福島県棚倉町大字棚倉馬場, so the pin is that district's centre point.福島県東白川郡棚倉町棚倉字馬場39
For these two, use the phone number or the address rather than the coordinates.
9 addresses were incomplete to begin with
While re-deriving the coordinates we found shrines whose address itself stopped at the city or town. Without a street number, no method can return anything but a centroid. We filled those in from primary sources.

From the Nagasaki and Kagoshima prefectural shrine offices, the town of Kamiyama, Tokushima Prefecture's official tourism site, and Izumo Daijingū's own website; each shrine page cites its source. Izumo Daijingū's address has no street number at all — 無番地 is the formal wording. The Tokushima and Kyoto shrine offices could not be reached that day, which is not the same as their having no entry.
All 120 addresses now carry a street number, with one exception: Oyama Jinja's summit shrine is simply "Tateyama Town (summit of Mount Tate)". Summits do not have street numbers.
How far apart the shrines are
What matters on a tour is the gap between shrines. Below is the straight-line distance from each shrine to the nearest other ichinomiya. It is not the driving distance — where a mountain or a strait lies between, the road is far longer.
Close enough to do in one morning
| Distance | Pair |

| 0.5 km | Kono Jinja — Manai Jinja Tango Province |
| 0.9 km | Kibitsuhiko Jinja — Kibitsu Jinja Bizen Province / Bicchu Province |
| 1.1 km | Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya — Suwa Taisha Shimosha Harumiya Shinano Province |

| 2.8 km | Amenotanagao Jinja — Oki Jinja Iki Province |
| 3.1 km | Kamowakeikazuchi Jinja — Kamomioya Jinja Yamashiro Province |
Most of the top of that list is one shrine in several precincts — Suwa Taisha's four halls, Wakasahiko and Wakasahime, Kono Jinja and its inner shrine Manai. Why the count of ichinomiya is hard shows up in the distances too.
Some close pairs cross a provincial border. Kibitsuhiko Jinja (Bizen) and Kibitsu Jinja (Bitchū) are 0.9 km apart — a remnant of the old province of Kibi being split in three, leaving two provinces' head shrines within walking distance of each other.

The first three need a boat or a plane. From Naminoue-gū in Okinawa the nearest ichinomiya is on Yakushima, 547 km away. On the main islands the widest gap is the 91.5 km between Komagata Jinja and Shiwahiko–Shiogama Jinja.
All the ichinomiya in one line: how far, as the crow flies?
Joining all 112 shrines in a single line, visiting each once, the shortest route we found is about 5,804 km in straight lines, starting at Hokkaido Jingu and ending at Naminoue Gu.
We cannot prove that this is the shortest. There are far too many possible orders of 112 shrines to try them all. What we can say is that no route can be shorter than 5,279 km — the length of the shortest network that connects every shrine without loops (the minimum spanning tree), and any single line through all of them is one such network. So the true shortest lies between 5,279 and 5,804 km; the route we found is 10% above that floor.
The three longest legs are Yaku Jinja → Naminoue Gu (547 km), Hokkaido Jingu → Iwakiyama Jinja (282 km), Iwakiyama Jinja → Chokaizan Omonoimi Jinja (177 km).

Straight-line distances, not road distances. Shrine complexes with several sites (the four of Suwa Taisha, the three of Oyama Jinja and so on) count once, and island shrines are joined in straight lines too. We started from the nearest-neighbour order and shortened it by reversing stretches (2-opt) and moving runs of one to three shrines, trying all 112 starting points. For a driving order, the day-route planner above, which works within one prefecture, is more useful.
The four extremes
| Of the classical provinces | Of all listed | |
|---|---|---|
| North | Iwakiyama JinjaTsugaru Province | Hokkaido Jingu |
| South | Yaku JinjaTane Province | Naminoue Gu |
| East | Komagata JinjaRikuchu Province | Hokkaido Jingu |
| West | Wadatsumi JinjaTsushima Province | Naminoue Gu |
The easternmost is in Iwate rather than anywhere further south, because north of the Kantō plain there are few ichinomiya on the Pacific side at all. The southernmost, on Yakushima, is the ichinomiya of Tane Province.
